Our Picks, Explained

Around the site you will see certain articles pulled forward: on the homepage, at the end of a post or in a short list on a category page. This page explains how we decide which ones, and gathers a few of our current favourites in one place.

What earns a spot

Some highlighted pieces mention or link to outside businesses, and putting an article forward is no guarantee about any of them. When we choose what to put forward, we ask a few plain questions:

  1. Is it useful right now? Seasonal guides move forward as the season approaches; a campfire guide matters more before a summer weekend than in the middle of winter.
  2. Does it help a beginner? Articles that make a first trip easier get priority, because those readers have the most to gain.
  3. Is it up to date? If a guide needs checking against current rules, it waits until that is done.
  4. Does it lead somewhere? We prefer pieces that connect naturally to the next step, such as a packing list that points to a sleeping-bag guide.

Picks for a first trip outdoors

Picks for planning and saving

Picks for slower moments

Not every hour of a trip is spent walking. For a rainy afternoon in the hostel lounge, our look at why Minecraft still draws players is a cheerful read. Food lovers might enjoy the piece on how Champagne makers bring new tools into old vineyards, and anyone heading for Sicily can start with our notes on arriving in Taormina.

Why picks change

Our highlights rotate with the seasons and with what readers ask about. An article dropping off a list does not mean it has become less accurate; it may simply be resting until its season comes round again. If you think a guide deserves more attention, tell us through the contact page.

From idea to page

How a guide gets made

  1. A real question

Topics start with something we or our readers wondered before a trip.

  2. Official sources first

Park notices, campground rules and maker instructions shape the draft.

  3. A beginner’s read

A second team member reads it fresh and marks every confusing step.

  4. Kept current

Guides are reread as seasons change and updated when advice moves on.
